Thanks to the dedication of board members, staff, volunteers, families and donors, Habitat for Humanity helped 27,635 Asia-Pacific families transform their lives in the year to 30th June 2009. The figure – the largest number of families ever served – represented an increase of 14 percent from the previous 12 months. According to Habitat’s Asia-Pacific vice-president Rick Hathaway, the total comprised new 9,865 houses, 5,295 house rehabilitations and 12,475 repairs. Disaster response programs accounted for one-third of the total. The most active country programs were in Indonesia, which assisted 7,026 families; India (5,126); Philippines (4,672); Nepal (1,786); Pakistan (1,616); Vietnam (1,601); Thailand (1,181); Sri Lanka (1,048); and Myanmar (1,008). As of June 2009, Habitat’s post-tsunami reconstruction programs had helped 21,368 families in Thailand, India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka – and are slated to top out at just over 25,000 toward 2010.
