Firming Up Plants To Rebuild Lives Through Repairs, Core Homes, and Access To Water And Sanitation Works

Sumatra, Indonesia : Habitat for Humanity Indonesia aims to raise an initial US$ 1.4 million for the first phase of its response to the devastating earthquake that shook Padang last month. The funds are slated to go towards assisting 1000 families with houses repairs and rehabilitations, access to clean water and the distribution of kits containing basic carpentry tools to use in the clean-up and later for rebuilding. The response would also involve a cash-for-work component to clear debris. This first phase is expected to take up to three months.

In a subsequent phase, Habitat’s envisages building 2500 “core” houses, repairing an additional 1000 houses and building 10 schools. The core house design is similar to one used by HFH Indonesia in rebuilding after the Yogyakarta earthquake. Equipped with a latrine, the model is an 18 sq.m. house with earthquake-resistant design features, and can be expanded in the future. The budget for this phase is estimated US$ 7 million.

To date, funding commitment has been secured from OCBC NISP,  NOKIA, General Electric, General Motors, and DBS Indonesia. Other corporations have also expressed interest in providing support. Discussion on possible resource and funding support are under way with USAID streaming partners, and with Habitat offices in Canada, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Germany and Great Britain.
