Devastating Flood Hits Situbondo

A Habitat team recently returned from an assessment trip to assess what can be done in flood-affected Situbondo district in Indonesia's East Java province. Over 10 people lost their lives and more than 9,500 homes were damaged including 640 houses destroyed by the flash flood that hit six districts, including Situbondo. The team is recommending that Habitat's Surabaya affiliate, supported by the national office, undertake the response. The response is likely to focus on providing expertise and encouraging quality house designs to better protect homes in an area that is vulnerable to volcano eruptions, earthquakes and other calamities.
