More Than 1000 Houses in Yogyakarta and Central Java: Completion of Yogyakarta Disaster Response Project
Yogyakarta, June 30th 2007: 1095 houses were symbolically handed over on Habitat for Humanity Indonesia House Dedication Ceremony. The first ceremony took place at Governor of Special District Yogyakarta Office. Also participated on the event were the donor representatives from Dow Indonesia, ExxonMobil, ABN Amro, Caritas Germany, Unilever and Yakkum. On his written speech, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, Governor of Special District Yogyakarta stated, “We realize that support from many parties took an important part to strengthen the victim’s spirit to rebuild their live. Moreover, what has been done by the donors who have partnered with Habitat for Humanity Indonesia is very beneficial for the victims.” 

On the same occasion, Mrs. Urai Rogers, President Director Dow Indonesia, also gave speech. “Nowadays, corporate aren’t just working for the benefit of the company, but it has larger social responsibilities. When we build houses for the victims, it’s not just about putting a roof above someone’s head, but to build the live of the family inside it. “


The ceremony then continued to the second hand over, took place in Gupolo Village, Prambanan District, Central Java. The ceremony was opened by a Keroncong (traditional music) performance by a group from Kalitengah Village, which was one of the Habitat’s sites. A ‘tumpeng’ rice cutting was also held on the ceremony as a symbol of gratefulness and blessings in Javanese culture.


Mr. Ragil Subagyo, the family representative from Muruh Village, Prambanan District, Central Java on his speech said, “The sincerity and the house provided by Habitat and its partner have touched our heart. Therefore we feel to have more spirit to rise up from our sorrow.”

This house dedication ceremony was mark of completing Habitat for Humanity Indonesia Disaster Response Program in Yogyakarta and Central Java. In total, 1105 houses are built and in addition, 486 families served from the program.
