A Concrete Act to Help Jogjakarta Earthquake Victims by University of Singapore and Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana
Twenty four students from National University of Singapore (NUS) and Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW)-Yogyakarta conducted workshop from 12 to 22 December 2006 at the UKDW campus to design a community hall. Sponsored by Habitat for Humanity Singapore, Singapore and Indonesian companies, The Designing and Building Together Program held by NUS and UKDW was a form of concrete act by the students to help earthquake victims. On the fourth day of the program, the students worked on the field at Botokenceng Village, Plered, Bantul, implemented the design they had formed on the workshop. Ms. TAN Beng Kiang, Lecturer Assistant from NUS said, “I think this is a very meaningful activity, to help other people who are less fortunate. It’s an eye opening experience for the students to see how other people live. Being an architect is about providing shelter for people, and the most basic shelter is a home.”
