Charitable spirit

Think of cheerful giver and Stuart Dean comes into mind. The general Electric regional director for Asia has been involved in Habitat’s work in Indonesia since 2002 when the 1.000 House Campaign was launched.

The campaigns is an ambitious program challenging corporate leaders, executives, officials, students and others to volunteer to raise funds and help build 1.000 homes for low income families in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Manado and Batam by 2007.

Under Stuart’s leadership, GE Elfun volunteers have adopted HFH Indonesia builds. For example, 18 GE Elfun volunteers built a house over four days in tsunami-affected Banda Aceh in April 2006. Stuart also donated cash and gift in kind over the years to HFH Indonesia. In aid of the 1.000 House Campaign, a culinary wine and cheese event was held at JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta. Out of the US$ 37.000 that was raised to fund more than 20 houses, Stuart Personally donated US$ 5.000.

On its part, GE has contributed US$15.000 and 500 bulbs to regular HFH Indonesia programs and US$500.000 and more than 5.000 bulbs to its tsunami reconstruction programs.

Given his active participation, volunteer builds are a family affair for the Deans as Stuart extended invitations to his wife ad son to join him on build sites.

As a senior GE executive, Stuart’s readiness to do his part for needy families in Indonesia will no doubt encourage his colleagues and even other corporations to do likewise
