Tsunami Recovery Report

June 2, 2006

Indonesia: In Jangka Buya sub-district of north Aceh’s Pidie district, families are returning to live in three villages that have been renamed Pasi aron.  Habitat is building 90 houses to accommodate all of the community. Villagers have also restored the lagoons they use for fish farming.

As the populated area closest to the December 2004 earthquake and Indian Ocean tsunami, the northern provinces of Indonesia’s Sumatra island suffered the greatest loss of life and property. Habitat for Humanity’s early tsunami recovery efforts in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam focused on laying the groundwork to build and repair more than 7,000 houses, many of them in isolated coastal communities. Working in close consultation with local community leaders has been a key to progress.

Target Revised for Meulaboh Construction

At the present cost of construction, Habitat expects to complete 1,500 houses rather than the 3,000 first projected for the Meulaboh area, Aceh Barat district, on the southern coast of Aceh province. The sponsor for house-building in Meulaboh is the Singapore Red Cross, on behalf of the people of Singapore.

Cot Kumbang Building Commences

Before the tsunami, 107 families lived on Cot Kumbang, a 300-hectare island north of Meulaboh. Now there are 97 households, but only 27 want to move back to the island where not a single structure remains. Habitat has started construction for 10 of the 27 houses and will begin building on the mainland in June. The island houses are steel-reinforced poured concrete.

Community Buildings Contribute to Recovery

Habitat means houses and more in Lampoh Kreung, a community of Sigli on the north coast of Aceh. At the request of community leaders and with funding from international advertising agency Ogilvy Group, Habitat built a community center and clinic. A kindergarten is planned as soon as local authorities can identify a site. The projects are much-appreciated contributions to community life and an economic boon for local laborers.
